Mummy Board TIP 21st Dynasty

Mummy Board TIP 21st Dynasty

Section of a Mummy Board (M1167). Third Intermediate Period, 21st Dynasty. Thebes. Wood with polychrome decoration on outer surface. Sawed off section, intact from side to side. Provenance: Acquired from Swedish collection 2001 A section of an early mummy board, cut diagonally from below the crossed arms. This section shows a large figure of the sky goddess Nut kneeling and facing right with her wings spread out across the board. There are short hieroglyphic inscriptions at either side of her head and Ba-birds at either side of her feet. Above her is a centrally placed pectoral shaped like a shrine with a scarab flanked by falcons within. At either side of the pectoral, reclining jackals are shown facing toward the center. There is a vertical crack down the center of the board that has caused some loss to the decoration and is somewhat fragile. The decoration is also marred by what appears to be bat guano which has defaced part of the image and left run-marks. The backside is undecorat
