A Fruit Basket from the Late 18th Dynasty. A fruit basket with lid . Round in shape with a slightly domed lid and sides tapering somewhat inward toward the flat base. Made of coils of split straw bound in halfa grass, some died a darker colour, possibly red, making a pattern of diagonal bands radiating from the center of the lid and continuing down the sides of the basket. Baskets similar to this have been found containing dried fruit and other items. Very similar baskets were found in the tomb of Tutankhamun. Exceptionally rare and in excellent condition despite some fraying to the lowest coil of the basket on one side and missing halfa grass binding along part of the edge of the basket and lid. New Kingdom, late 18th Dynasty. Acquired from Richard Gill (Eternal Egypt) ca 1995. Originally from Bonham’s. Two similar baskets were found in the tomb of the architect Kha, containing cumin and dried imported juniper berries of Arceuthos drupacea and Juniperus oxycedrus (Turin Museum). See a
