Wooden Headrest from the Late 18th Dynasty . H 18 cm. A fine and functional wooden headrest with curved headpiece, shaft and base all sculpted from a single piece of wood. This piece has typical proportions of the late 18th Dynasty, as well as adzed out angles on the shaft. Such headrests were actually used to facilitate sleeping on one’s side, even on a hard surface, and are much more comfortable than they look. This example is still in very good condition and shows the wear of actual use. Late 18th Dynasty, around the reign of Horemheb. Intact, besides two minor chips. 18 cm. This type of headrest is more often found made of three pieces, allowing for height adjustment by a carpenter. This one was surely custom made for a specific person. Provenance: Acquired from Richard Gill (Eternal Egypt) in 1992.
