Coffin Fragment Third Intermediate Period 21 st Dynasty

Coffin fragment in wood with polychrome decoration over yellow on outside and and a white gesso wash which is undecorated on the inside. This piece is from the central front of a lid or mummy - board, below the arms. The front surface shows the beginning of a two-column vertical hieroglyphic inscription which ran down the front of the coffin. Above the inscription, a scarab is shown rolling a sun disk and flanked at either side by crowned uraei. Wings of larger deities are visible at either side. at either side of the main inscription, shorter horizontal inscriptions mentioning " The honorable one before the Great God (Osiris)" are found and opposing scenes showing Osiris seated on a throne within a shrine surmounted by a row of uraei. The main inscription reads "Words spoken by the honorable one before Osiris, the Great God, Lord of..." A crack down the center of the piece has caused some loss to the raised paint of the scarab, but is stable. An good example of this type of coffin
