A Canopic Jar Lid belonging to a Woman. New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty. Fired Nile silt fabric with polychrome paint. Intact Aquired: Charles Ede Ltd., London. A fine example of an 18th Dynasty canopic jar, wheel-made from pottery and with a sculpted or molded face of a woman. The face is painted yellow and has subtle but attractive features; the hair is painted blue. The inside of the jar lid is hollow and shows the rilling lines of the potters fingers and the wheel-turned rim. An excellent example of a rare and early type, before the four Sons of Horus heads were introduced. Four canopic jars were included in the tomb and contained the mummified viscera of the deceased.
