Coffin Fragment New Kingdom 19-20 Dynasty

Coffin Fragment: Hand and Arm (M1304). New Kingdom, 19th-20th dynasty. Height: 16.5 cm, width: 13 cm. Thick cartonnage, plaster and wood, polychrome decoration Aquired from an Australian collection, 2002 A fragment from an anthropoid coffin in cartonnage. The fragment is from the center of the breast of the coffin and shows part of the right arm of a male figure crossing over the wrist of the left hand. The left hand is clenched and made of wood - otherwise the raised decoration is in relief in the plaster. The skin color of the arms and clenched fist indicate that this is from the coffin of a man or boy. The series of lines in front of the fist belong to the figure’s pleated clothing, showing that the coffin showed the owner in every-day clothing instead of mummiform. Each arm is decorated with a painted bracelet and there are the remains of a recumbent jackal at the bottom of the fragment.
