Inscribed wine jar fragments 2nd Dynasty (3)
Two Inscribed Wine Jar Fragments. Thinite Period, 2nd Dynasty, reign of Khasekhemwy Abydos, inside enclosure of Shunet es-Zebib. Fired Nile silt fabric. Provenance: Acquired from L Bjuggren, collected in 1960s Two Thinite Period wine jar fragments with inscribed wine labels. The first is a body sherd showing one almost intact serekh potmark and a single line remaining of a second example at edge (M610). This mark indicates a palace or temple area – i.e. a 5000 year old ‘chateau’ wine. The second fragment is a rim sherd showing two early hieroglyphs; the nb-basket over a kneeling archer meaning ‘Lord of the Nubians’. Such early hieroglyphic inscriptions are very rare. Note that both inscriptions were incised into the clay before firing.
