Fish Mummies & Mummy Fragments. 1. A group of four small mummified fish, probably fry of the species Lates niloticus, or Nile Perch. These are reputedly from a larger linen package containing hundreds of specimens ranging in size from the smallest to the largest in this group. The smallest fish is one of the most diminutive intact mummies ever documented. Such packages are often intricately wrapped and contain large numbers of small mummified snakes, crocodile babies etc. Reputedly from Esna. Graeco-Roman Period. Provenance: Gift from Swedish Collector 2005 (two) & German collection of R. Hartlaub, Rechberg 2006 (two). (M1400 & M1515). 2. Animal mummy fragments: the lower jaw of a crocodile mummy from Tehna el-Gebel, L: 87 mm (M573); leg bone from a mummified ibis from Tuna el-Gebel, L: 102 mm (M194a); and a lump of bituminous resin from a human mummy.
