Votive glass offering cup of Ptolemy V

A royal votive offering cup fragment in light blue glass with an incised vertical inscription. The inscription reads … Ptolemy V, Beloved of Sokar. The lower half of the vessel remains with no rim remaining. Excellent condition. Ptolemaic Period. This example is by far the rarest from this group. Ptolemy V is the same king mentioned on the Rosetta Stone. Authentic examples of such votive cups with royal names are almost always fragmentary. Any objects with Royal names are very rare and highly sought after. Objects with cartouches of Ptolemaic rulers are almost never seen for sale. This example was originally sold by Sotheby’s London during the 1980s. It was acquired by a US collector whose other Egyptian objects and manuscripts are now part of the collections at the Museum of Man in San Diego. Acquired by present collection in 2009.
